The Mother and Child Health (MCH) Project - April 09

The MCH Project is supported by the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) and is operated by UNCODET in partnership with BTT and Skillshare International (SKI) and was due to finish on 30th June this year.

Whilst the project has been outstandingly successful, unavoidable staff changes resulted in programme delays which threatened the planned exit strategy.  BLF, exceptionally, overturned their normal “use it or lose it” philosophy and approved an application to allow us to use the under spent funds to extend the project to the end of December.  (An earlier application for a new BLF supported project had been unsuccessful.)

The Project Team is stronger now than it has ever been and is in a good position to make the necessary arrangements to make the successful outcomes of the MCH project sustainable after BLF support ends.  After follow-up and monitoring by the Project Team and documentation of the outcomes, there will be a massive consultation programme with all the groups involved in the project. These include the UNCODET Management Committee, Moshi District Council, Community Health Promoters, Village Committees, Dispensary Management Committees, and various Government Agencies.
This will lead to:
• agreed ways of sharing learning and the information materials from the project
• effective management of dispensaries
• handing over of dispensaries’ assets to Moshi District Council
• future support from Government Agencies.

BTT has worked with UNCODET and SKI helping with the initial planning of the project, advice and monitoring throughout the past years and will also be helping with the final stages during the autumn.  It has been a very successful and fulfilling partnership bringing great advances in the Health provision for the Uru community.
